Company Profile

Roberts Mutual Insurance CompanyRoberts County Farmers Mutual Insurance Company had its first organization meeting in 1897. One hundred and two signatures were obtained, mostly in the northern and northeastern part of Roberts County. Applying for a charter was postponed because Roberts County had some turmoil regarding the County seat. During this time, the newly formed Roberts County Farmers Mutual Insurance Company did not file for a charter.

In 1905, a meeting was held in the Kaiser schoolhouse north of Rosholt. At this meeting signatures were again obtained and an application for a charter was submitted to the Secretary of State and the charter was granted.

The first board of directors and officers elected were as follows: S.J. Wallstrom, President; Peter Kaiser, Vice President; O.E. Lien, Secretary; John Loken, Treasurer; (all from Vernon, SD); and Directors E.J. Price; Ole Hedstrom and O.H. Dahl all from Old Effington, SD.

The first year of the company’s operation $25,000 of insurance was written.

O.E. Lien resigned to become Auditor of Roberts County and O.K. Sather was elected to replace him. O.K. Sather operated the business from his farm home (In Hart Township) from 1915 to 1943. In 1943, the company moved into Sisseton and Art Sather was serving as Secretary. Joseph Flaa was the office manager. The building being rented by the company had a fire in 1959. The records and policies were stored in a safe, but many of them crumbled because of the exposure to heat. In 1961, a new structure was built at the current location. Agnes Horr served as manager from 1959-1980. Marcia Peterson served as manager from 1980-2012.  Julie Stapleton has served as manager since 2012.

In 1984, Robert Co Farm Mutual became a state mutual insurance company and extended coverage to write perils of wind and hail and began to offer homeowners and ranchowners policies. At this time, the name of the company was changed slightly. (Farmers to Farm). The office was fully computerized in 1987.

Roberts Co. Mutual merged in 1994 with Kingsbury Farm Mutual Insurance Company in DeSmet, SD. In 1998, we acquired the policyholders of Denver-Kingsbury Farm Mutual Insurance Company. In 2008, Roberts Co. Mutual merged with Central Farm Mutual in Onida, SD. At this time, Roberts Co, Mutual expanded their business in the western part of South Dakota.

In 2001, the Sather Insurance Agency was for sale. Roberts Mutual purchased it as a separate corporation, owned by Roberts Co. Farm Mutual Insurance Company. The new Company is TEAM Insurance Agency.

Roberts Co Mutual has about 60 agents across the state of South Dakota. We have grown from 100 policyholders to 1900 policyholders.
